PRE-DENTISTRY: MAJOR OR PROGRAM?

Some people are confused whether pre-dentistry is major or just another program at a university. In contrast to dentistry, the word “pre-dentistry” doesn't seem too flattering, does it? Which is how people got to thinking over its significance in their future career as a dentist.

What is pre-dentistry really? And is it just another subject or a major requirement for acceptance to a dentistry school? In this article, we'll find out.

The verdict

Pre-dentistry is much like pre-medicine, or pre-med. Think of it as a training program before you get to the good stuff. Learning medicine—or in this case, dentistry—isn't a joke, and it takes years before an average person is called a good doctor or dentist. And as any dentist will tell you, you need time to prepare for those years of intense studying.

So pre-dentisitry courses were established. This not only allow students to focus on their subject area, but it also buys them time to think if being a dentist is really what they want. In addition pre-dentistry also helps the student prepare for his or her DAT (Dental Admission Test).

So the verdict is... it depends.

The school gets to decide

For some schools, pre-dentistry is a major course just like pre-med. For others it is simply a vocational training toward a specific field—in this case, dentistry. Schools that offer pre-dentistry courses sometimes accept students without a bachelors degree. But those without often requires a bachelors degree before the student applies for a doctorate program.

So it comes down to which school you want to get into. If you want to get into a school and pre-dentistry is listed as a major, go ahead and write pre-dentistry as your major. But if the school doesn't have it listed as a major, then pick a science course—any course—and go with that.
